Advice: ESSA and Personalized Learning

How to leverage ESSA to support innovation

Overview

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 includes several provisions that can help states and districts implement and scale personalized learning. Elements of the act, and the funding it reallocates, impact the following areas:

  • Direct Student Services
  • Funding for Digital Learning
  • Teacher Capacity to Support Personalized Learning
  • Standards
  • Assessments
  • Transitions
  • Report on Student Home Access to Digital Resources
  • Accountability
  • District Plans

The Alliance for Excellent Education has a helpful primer summarizing some of the key ways that ESSA supports states and districts in implementing personalized learning. Chiefs for Change developed an in-depth paper on how ESSA will provide SEAs and LEAs with resources to support Direct Student Services, enabling families to choose personalized, outcomes driven, educational services for their children.
