Bronx Arena’s Master Schedule

Organizing allotted time and physical space to maximize human-to-human contact

Context

When Bronx Arena thought about their schedule, their goal was to maximize human-to-human contact so they could create authentic student-teacher relationships that can’t be built at scale within a 45 minute class structure. Instead of multiple short blocks, students at Bronx Arena are only in three blocks a day; a 90 minute Learning Lab and four hours of Arena time broken into two blocks (two hours each). The larger blocks allow for more flexibility, dynamic opportunities, and the ability for students to meet with various teachers and their Advocate Counselor in large group, small group, and one-on-one settings.

  • Basic Schedule
    • 8:30am-10:00am: Learning Labs - subject focused courses that allow students the ability to engage and apply curriculum in new ways through two challenges and a capstone project. Students finish courses after completing all of the necessary work, which can happen over a variable amount of time. They start a new Learning Lab immediately after completing the previous one.
    • 10:00am-12:00pm: Arena Time - Students work with their generalist teacher, Advocate Counselor, and content specialists (through pull out and push in opportunities) on their long term plan, their focus and backup credits, and specific daily tasks.
    • 12:00pm-12:30pm: Lunch
    • 12:30pm-2:30pm: Arena Time - Same as above to continue progress with tasks and activities for the day.

Student Does

  • Identifies five tasks to complete by the end of the day.
  • Self-manages their time to ensure they complete the required five daily tasks.
  • Builds out Credit Map, a personalized plan to graduate on time (with the generalist and Advocate Counselor) including focus credits, backup credits, etc.

Teacher Does

  • Stays with students until graduation.
  • Assesses students collaboratively (with content specialists and Advocate Counselors) on an ongoing basis.
  • Meets individually with each student to develop and modify their Credit Map.
  • Supports students in large and small groups, and one-on-one.

Technology Does

  • Tracks students’ progress towards their daily, weekly, monthly goals.
