Context
Teachers collect and use data every day. Most of these data are more qualitative than quantitative and work well for smaller daily adjustments for students.
This data use could be something as simple as a teacher recognizing students struggling on a concept and scheduling more time with them during the day or week. In other cases, data are more formal, coming from quizzes or benchmark assessments. Roots often compiles these data into "heat maps", which visually plot students' results, color coding students by grade level or an existing assigned group. Teachers use these data to form new groups, re-form groups, or pull-out students for remediation depending on how they are progressing within certain learning objectives.
