One-Way Streets

Ensuring efficient student movement

Overview

Efficient transitions will cut down on disruptions and save the teacher valuable instructional time. While designing an innovative classroom setup, make sure to think about student movement. How will students get from A to B? Where will they pick up their devices? How will the move between groups?

Establishing one-way streets is a strategy to ensure students move smoothly and efficiently throughout the classroom by having all students walk in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction during transitions. This minimizes student interactions, prevents collisions that can be especially costly with devices, and saves time. This strategy has been effective with students of all ages, and easily becomes a norm that students feel comfortable reinforcing among themselves. Watch this strategy in action.
