West Belden's Open Doors

Opening traditional classroom entries and exits to expand learning space and options

Context

West Belden makes multi-age classrooms work within a traditional school building. For large multi-age classrooms, in lieu of a costly remodel to knock down walls, they have simply located classes next to each other, opened doors between classrooms, and allowed students to move freely between them.

Student Does

  • Moves between classes depending on their assignments, learning needs, or space needs.

Teacher Does

  • Recognizes that students will need to move out of their classroom for a variety of reasons.
  • Prepares for students that may come into their classroom for certain resources.
