Context
The transition to self-directed learning requires, at least initially, a higher level of support and monitoring as students build skills. Pleasant View teachers put the following pieces in place.
- Clear classroom norms: Teachers and students worked together to identify daily classroom norms at the beginning of the year.
- Headphone use: Audio is often a component in online programs and headphones are available so students working outside of the programs are not disturbed.
- City Year Corps Members: Pleasant View also leverages the City Year program, which provides volunteers who work in the classroom supporting students. While City Year Corps members are not responsible for driving instruction, they are able to provide more focused attention to individual or small groups of students as they work through their Personalized Learning Plans.
