Student Voice and Choice - Common Practices

Overview

Student choice and voice is a critical component of Trailblazer’s blended model. Educators try to provide ample opportunities for students to have choice and voice in how they want to learn a concept or skill. While their personalized Learner Pathway may dictate what they need to work on during class time, they are often able to choose the order in which they work. Most of the time they can choose learning partners and groups, as well as where in the classroom they learn best. Students also have the opportunity to work outside class in flexible learning areas (hallways, shared spaces, media center, etc.), so long as the teacher knows and the student can justify their choice of location.

Students also have choice in how they show mastery of a concept, which can be done with pre- and post-tests, creating a project, doing an experiment, teaching a lesson, or creating an exemplar, among other methods. Students can also propose new ways to show mastery to the teacher.
