Overview
For the 2020 - 2021 school year, Dallas ISD’s personalized learning schools focused their work on the power of moments, which stems from the Chip and Dan Heath book, The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact. This book inspired learning experiences that were oriented towards creating opportunities for students to experience elevation, insight, pride, and connection in their learning with their communities. One way that teachers at Hall Personalized Learning Academy at Oak Cliff helped students to harness these moments was through Teach-Back Tuesdays.
Approach
Every week, students are invited to submit Flipgrid videos of themselves teaching an academic concept or skill of their choice to a person or object (e.g., parent, sibling, stuffed animal, etc.). These videos are incorporated into the school’s morning announcements every Tuesday and the morning announcement videos are shared via Facebook Live so that both students and family members can engage and celebrate this teaching moment. Throughout the year, different students are highlighted, and the exercise promotes authentic student representation of internalization and application of learned content while also promoting student agency.
This strategy is a part of TLA's Hop, Skip, Leapfrog release, which explores the concrete ways in which schools and systems pursued student-centered innovation during COVID-19. Explore the full guide to find additional strategies, insights, and resources.
