Giving students options on what language to use when monitoring progress

Overview

When thinking about how students can effectively self-monitor their mastery, progress, assignments, mood, etc., it is important to remember that language can be a significant challenge for students who are learning English (EL). In order to better support full engagement, it is good to offer students options for the language they can use to complete these types of tasks. By offering the option to use a student’s home language when recording progress (that is student-facing) learners are able to more fully illustrate where they are without being held back by their language proficiency.
