Leveraging Data to Advocate for More Creative Learning Experiences

Using data to understand and create more creative learning experiences for students

Overview

Currently, a disconnect exists between the demand for students to develop creativity skills and how they are provided with opportunities to develop them. While teachers have expressed the desire to learn how to foster creativity, they do not always know how to factor it into their instructional design. Through our research at The Learning Accelerator (TLA), we’ve developed a number of tools to collect data related to creativity in the classroom:

We have chosen the 4Ps (Rhodes, 1961) – Press, Process, Person, and Product – as the creativity framework centering our resources in this area. Typically, discussion of creativity and technology revolves around Product – the multimedia created as part of a lesson or activity. However, the 4Ps takes a broader approach, acknowledging the required learning conditions (Press), ways to encourage students' thinking, including creative communication, creative problem-solving, and creative thinking (Process), and students’ habits of mind (Person).

As a result, data can help inform advocacy for more creative learning opportunities across the system through:

  • Essential Supports such as professional learning or high-quality technology tools to develop students' creativity skills and support teachers in the design of new experiences.

  • Enabling Systems and Structures such as policies that encourage teachers to implement new types of lessons, sufficient technology infrastructure to allow for more creative uses of digital media, and – most importantly – considerations of time. This involves time for students to engage in meaningful work as well as for teachers to effectively plan new types of learning opportunities.

  • Ongoing Processes to ensure that educators and students are rewarded for engaging in new types of learning experiences that develop students’ creativity skills.
