Trailblazer Communications Plan

Creating Transparency and "Seeing is Believing" Tours

Trailblazer Elementary School in Colorado recognized the importance of good communication early in their implementation of blended learning. Shifting to a new instructional approach meant new ideas and terminology, and Trailblazer wanted to ensure they were communicating these ideas clearly by avoiding jargon and putting them in terms that are easy to understand. They also sought to ensure that the purpose of their work was clear: they were implementing blended learning to improve teaching and learning for their students. While this may seem obvious, many districts have fallen into the trap of not communicating this clearly and suffered from distracting conversations as a result.

Trailblazer’s commitment to clear communications goes well beyond messaging plans and is evidenced by a variety of initiatives throughout the school, including:

  • Tours - Trailblazer started to host “Seeing is Believing” tours, opening their doors several times a year to visitors. These tours are a commitment to transparency and allow them to share their progress and lessons learned with others, while also gaining valuable feedback from those outside the school.
  • Digital Portfolios - Trailblazer has increased its commitment to communication with parents. Many teachers currently use a digital portfolio tool which students add to every day. With the quick click of a button students can share their work with teachers and parents, and parents can see their child’s progress in real time.
