Virtual Weekly Teaching and Learning Workshops

Weekly workshops delivered virtually to support personalized, remote learning

Overview

As Chicago Public Schools closed its schools for in-person instruction, district teachers and leaders needed more targeted support to help personalize instruction and adapt their practice for remote settings. To provide the needed support and resources, the Department of Personalized Learning held weekly virtual workshops to support development of new virtual teaching skills.

Approach

To best meet the needs of workshop participants, the Department of Personalized Learning solicited feedback from school leaders and teachers to determine the topics for each workshop. Sessions are held virtually each Wednesday after school and are shared in a weekly newsletter that goes out to district employees. From there, teachers can sign up for workshops based on need and interest. While workshop topics vary, the structure of the sessions includes:

  • An agenda of workshop activities

  • Workshop objectives

  • An overview of the concept

  • Vetted exemplars, templates, and other resources that users can leverage in their schools and classrooms

  • Examples of how the concept connects to students and families, including suggestions for how to involve families supporting learning a home

These workshops are strategically designed to be short, concrete, and actionable so that those who participate are able to implement the strategies easily and effectively.

This strategy is a part of TLA's Hop, Skip, Leapfrog release, which explores the concrete ways in which schools and systems pursued student-centered innovation during COVID-19. Explore the full guide to find additional strategies, insights, and resources.
